The River's Embrace
November 2018, The Westin Brisbane
111 Mary Street, Brisbane QLD Australia, Curated by Independent Arts Management IAM Projects
Laser cut, powder coated aluminium and perspex. 14m x 1.7m

River's Embrace is an abstracted narrative of Brisbane's flood history created within a Japanese aesthetic linking to Rei's arts practice and heritage. The work features the Brisbane River from Fig Tree Pocket to Hamilton, with topographical flood indicators dating back to the 1890s. The spreading tentacles of flood waters past are commemorated with colour depth changes that indicate the flood waters recorded in historical maps. The work celebrates the city's river and responds to the curatorial theme Haven, identifying the site's past, present and future communities.
